Frequently Asked Questions
What is a jewellery valuation?
A jewellery valuation is a professional written report prepared by a qualified, accredited valuer. It provides a detailed description of your item, including metal, gemstones, hallmarks, and craftsmanship, along with an assessed value for a specific purpose. Whether you need a valuation for insurance, probate, or legal proceedings, a professionally prepared report gives you confidence and legal standing.
What is an insurance replacement valuation?
An insurance replacement valuation establishes the current retail cost to replace your item with one of equivalent quality, age, and character. It is the figure your insurer requires to ensure you are fully covered. Without an up-to-date valuation, you risk being underinsured, meaning a claim may not cover the true replacement cost of your jewellery.
How often should I have my jewellery revalued?
It is generally recommended to have your jewellery revalued every 2–5 years. Precious metal prices and diamond values fluctuate considerably, and an outdated insurance valuation can leave a significant gap between your cover and actual replacement costs. Regular revaluation is a simple way to protect your most treasured pieces.
Insurance vs
Probate value?
These are two distinct valuations serving very different purposes. An insurance replacement value reflects the current retail cost to replace an item. A probate valuation, required for HMRC and estate administration, reflects the realistic open market or auction value at the date of death, which is typically significantly lower. Using the wrong figure for either purpose can have serious financial or legal consequences.
What is a Family Division valuation?
A Family Division valuation is prepared specifically for matrimonial or civil partnership proceedings, where jewellery and other assets must be fairly assessed for division. These reports must meet the standards required by the Family Court and are prepared with the relevant legal framework in mind. An experienced, qualified valuer is essential for this type of instruction.
Do you value loose gemstones?
Yes. Loose and unmounted gemstones can be assessed independently of any setting. A gemstone valuation report includes a full description of species, variety, colour, clarity, cut, carat weight, and estimated value, whether for insurance, sale, or identification purposes.
How long does a valuation take?
This depends on the number of items and complexity. A single piece can typically be assessed and reported on within a few days of inspection. For larger collections or estate work, timescales will be discussed at the point of enquiry.
Do I need to leave my jewellery with you?
In most cases, items are inspected at our Hatton Garden studio. For insurance valuations, items are usually returned the same day. For more complex assessments, we will agree a timescale with you in advance.
